Anti-Social Behaviour and Safety Concerns Linked to Surron-Style Bikes

Illegal Use of Surron and Electric Motorcycles in Knaresborough

North Yorkshire Police have received reports of electric motorcycles, commonly known as Surron bikes, being ridden within the Knaresborough area.

Whilst these bikes are often mistaken for electric bicycles (e-bikes), they are significantly different. A legal e-bike must have pedals, a motor with a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts, and electrical assistance must cut out at 15.5mph. Many Surron-style bikes are capable of much higher speeds, are powered by a throttle and are often classed as motor vehicles rather than bicycles. 

When used on roads or other public places, these vehicles may require registration, insurance, vehicle taxation and the rider to hold the appropriate driving licence.

The illegal use of these bikes can cause nuisance, anti-social behaviour and put pedestrians, cyclists and other road users at risk. We are particularly interested in reports of these bikes being ridden on roads, parks, footpaths, bridleways, cycle paths and other public spaces.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team is aware of the concerns raised by local residents and will continue to carry out patrols and proactive enquiries aimed at identifying those responsible. Where appropriate, officers will seek to remove illegally used vehicles from the streets and will investigate and prosecute offences that are identified. Riders found using these vehicles without the required legal documentation or permissions may be liable to enforcement action.

If you see one of these bikes, please report it and, where possible, provide:

• Date and time
• Location
• Description of the bike
• Description of the rider(s)
• Direction of travel
• Any registration number displayed
• Any photographs or video footage obtained safely

 101 - To report non-emergency incidents or provide information.

 999 - If the incident is occurring at the time of the call and there is an immediate risk to public safety or a crime is in progress.

Information provided by the public helps North Yorkshire Police build intelligence, identify offenders and take positive action where appropriate.
